...

gianna...(1) You played with playdough for the first time this week, and actually didn't try to eat it! You have almost completely graduated to eating breakfast and lunch at the little table in the kitchen (out of the highchair).

gabe...(3) You call a spoon a "bassoon." I never want to forget that. You love your new pocket knife. We made a batch of homemade playdough this week and it was a big hit.

...his first knife...

...
I finally got around to ordering his first pocket knife, part of our deal with potty training.
It came yesterday and he could hardly wait to put it together with Steve.

I was in the process of putting Gianna to bed, but I loved the few glimpses I stole.
He even let it stay on the table by his bed. He is very particular about what is allowed on that table. A flashlight, rosary, water, tissue...and now the knife. Just like dad.

We skyped Nanny and Pop first thing this morning to show them. He patiently waited in the office until I told him we could message them, due to the time change.

...the farmall puzzle...

...

Gabe received his first big boy puzzle for Christmas...a 24 piecer. He spent hours doing it over and over and over. He has asked for a more challenging puzzle. Unbeknownst to me, my dad found a puzzle that he was incredibly excited about and purchased it for Gabe as it has two of his favorite things....

A tractor. It is red.

It is a 1000 piece puzzle.

The box came yesterday and he couldn't wait to work on it. I told him it will be a bit to challenging for awhile, but he just wanted to work on it. We worked and worked this morning and made a reaaaallly small dent. He can't wait to keep working on it. I may lose my island for the next ten years ;).

...the roaring 20's...

...
My husband's company holiday party was this past weekend. I really look forward to it each year. This year, the location wasn't near my inlaws, as typical, which made us unsure if we could make it. Fortunately, my husbands Aunt and Uncle generously agreed to babysit as they lived twenty minutes from the location. We spent most of the afternoon with them and I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly they warmed up to them. Gabe is becoming quite the social butterfly.

We donned our attire and made a quick dash out as they were leaving with the kids to take them to Mass. Fortunately, they said they were both great. I can't imagine taking someone else's kids to Mass, but I was really thankful. I had planned to come home around bedtime to put the kids to bed. They convinced me that the kids would be fine and they would call if they needed anything.

I felt incredibly spoiled.

Live music (stand-up and trumpet) serenaded the dinner hour, which was a really nice touch. We milled and talked with as many people as possible. This was the largest turnout, close to 200.

The highlight of the evening? The dancing.

We are known as the swing dancing couple, which made the theme even more fun. Someone had requested a swing song and neither of us were near the dance floor, but we caught the last few minutes and made the night worth it. I haven't danced that much since our wedding.

I didn't take any pictures...so here is a cell pic from someone at the party.
We got back just after 11, which felt late ;), but totally worth it.

...

gianna...1...The newest batch of books. She made the cutest inhale as she lifted every flap.  She is learning how to giggle. She said "peanut butter" yesterday. Gabe heard it too. I just looked at her. Crazy.

gabe...3...Such a change in his personality. He has been the first to volunteer at storytime. He got to take a show a tell toy this week. He took Kevin and got to tell Miss Karen all about him. He was beaming. He is really focused on being "in charge." I tell him when I step out of the room, he is in charge of his sister. I can hear him say little things (correct, mind you)..."we don't do that Gianna...I am in charge."

...things I don't want to forget | Gianna...

You are my sweets. I can't even describe how much you love me. I have asked Steve to start recording the two of us together, as I want to remember. You love to just be held by me or lay on me. You are really only content in my arms. You sing this little "deh deh deh deh deh" whenever I hold or nurse you. I am feeling that you will probably only nurse for a few more weeks, which makes me sad as I truly love nursing my babies. It is our special time together when time stands still. Your hair is crazy long and thick. You love your shoes. You make these sweet little car noises as you drive the matchbox and trains around.

You can sit for the longest time reading books to yourself. You sing song the words. You love to climb right up in my lap and request the book of choice. You love bananas and peanut butter by the tablespoon.

Love you.

...1920s party...

...
We have the company Holiday party coming up. It is a 1920s theme...and I am super excited as we are swing dances. I looked at dozens of flapper outfits and never found anything that was in my budget, or that would be long enough.

So....I found a few pieces and it is starting to come together. I will actually try to get a photo of us together this year, as I usually forget.
I stumbled upon this image and loved the outfit on the left. So, she was my inspiration:

My dress isn't a drop waist. I am infact wearing a skirt under a dress. I did some alterations on the shoulders, and haven't decided if I should alter the length to show the chiffon skirt. The dress on it's own was too short, hence the shirt. I got (not the shoes or pearls) all of the items on clearance and for less than $30. I just need to practice my cupid's bow lips....and buy some lipstick ;).

...things I don't want to forget | Gabe...

...

You are growing up so quickly. It is exciting, but very hard at the same time. This weekend, you asked if you could climb into bed using your stepstool (instead of me putting you in bed). You said you wanted to do it yourself. A small piece of my heart was yanked out. You are asking me to play with you less and less. It seems like I say no too much, and that is the cause. I am folding clothes. I am doing the dishes. I am. I am. I know that isn't the case and I know it is due to you growing up, but it is still hard. This morning, I heard you talking in the toyroom. I asked what you were doing, and you told me you were reading a book. I asked you if you would like me to read a few books to you. You said. "It is ok mom. I am reading to myself."

You are so helpful around the house. You must get me 100 things throughout the course of the day. You are getting quite proficient at putting away the toys. You tell us I am such a big boy. It is because I am so big. I am growing big.

You are, sweet boy. So, so, big.

...our weekends...

...

This photo just makes me smile.
We have been going to a different Parish on Sundays. It initially started due to an earlier Mass time, as the kids are up and ready by 6AM most days, which makes for Mass during a normal nap time. We also really haven't found a sense of community at our Parish. This might be partially due to attending an early Mass time, where we consistently have two of the only three kids present. Gabe is really fond of our Priest (as are we). But, not feeling connected has made us question if we need to try a different Parish. We have been going to a much more traditional Parish (not just the building), which we were both really missing after leaving Colorado. We have already been approached by a dozen people that have come up after Mass. We will continue to pray and see what is best for our family.

After Mass, we have recently been picking up a local paper and a few donuts from the local grocery. It started as a "if you are good" tradition, but they are honestly almost always good. I think we said no one time in the last year and a half. We come home, read the paper while drinking coffee and eating a donut.

This was this past Sunday. I have no idea why her expression for this moment, but it is one we often see.

...siblings...

...
He is her protector. He constantly tells me how "it is my job to protect her." She has started to want to be around him all of the time. One night this week, the kids were sitting on little stools and watching the fire. She stood up and walked over to him and hugged him, which was the first time she has hugged anyone. She talks to you  (sweet little coos and noises) when she loves on you. She was singing to him. He was so happy.

He wanted so badly to pull her around the yard. She weighs only a few pounds less than he, which made it impossible. So he said he would just pretend. He turned around to talk to her and she grinned from ear to ear.

...2|52...

...
The weather has been bitter cold for most of the week. Yesterday, we were finally out of single digits!! Which called for the 29 minutes donning the abominable snow suits, three minutes outside...and copious amounts of tepid hot chocolate. Actually, the kids lasted about 45 minutes, which was quite long in knee deep snow.
gianna...1...She hates hats. She isn't a fan of gloves. She loves to show you her belly button. She started kissing objects this week. She has been so affectionate lately, I can hardly describe how wonderful she is to be around. She loves to feed her self with a fork and has recently decided that she would rather sit at the table in lieu of the high chair.
gabe...3...He told his first joke last week: "Mom, what do snowmen eat???? MILK!!!" :) He got his bow tie (for the wedding) in the mail last night. We clipped it on today...not a fan. Yesterday, he started yelling, "MOM, MOM, MOM! There is something on our house!!! Somebody put something white on our house!" I quickly made it to the kitchen...."THOSE, MOM!!!" The icicles. He promptly asked me to fix it. If only fella, give it a few weeks.

...just like dad...

...
One night at dinner (months ago), I caught Gabe making side glances at Steve.

"Look, mom. I am like dad!" he had his armed folded behind his head.

I giggled. As soon as he did it, I noticed that Steve did the EXACT same thing. It is funny to see little mannerisms reflected in your own children. He tries so hard to emulate Steve. He doesn't have to try hard, he is so much like his daddy. It makes my heart smile. The other day, he asked if I would take some pictures of him. We spent the morning playing with the cloud dough and hadn't managed to put new clothes on.
I looked down at my camera, and as I glanced up, he did this sweet little pose.

Just.Like.Dad.
I couldn't be happier that he has him as a role model.

...little fashionista...

...
Her preferred outfit is just a diaper. Some days she will ask for socks. Lately, just her hooded sweatshirt. However, her favorite article of clothing is this pair of dress shoes. After I put them on her, she does this sweet little giggle/head cock. She touches them and says "pretty."

Today, she wanted to wear them. I convinced her that the shirt matched.
She immediately came down to the living room and started playing with her little baking set. She isn't quite capable of unvelcroing them from each other, but she loves to stack them repeatedly.

...cloud dough fun...

...
I have done a few activities with my kids that are way more work than they are worth. I have been compiling a Pinterest folder of ideas to last until spring. The last few days have been some pretty early mornings. Gabe is routinely up before 6AM, meaning dressed and ready to go! The weather was in the single digits yesterday morning and the snow and ice storm yesterday meant we wouldn't be traveling. So, we made a batch of cloud dough.

Gianna was really only interested in eating it, so we went and played something else. Gabe played for at least 30 minutes. We mixed 2 c flour + 1/4 vegetable oil. I only have gel food coloring, which I could only manage to mix into my skin. He got a few of these toys in his stocking. After he was done with the dirt, I filled a bowl with warm soap and he washed each of them. All told, it was at least a 75 minute activity. Then we had a haircut, and then a bath.
Phew...by 11AM, my creativity was barely hanging on. We shall see what tomorrow brings.

...the gingerbread farm...

...
The kids received a gingerbread "farm" from our neighbor for Christmas.

I had hopes to do something special for Epiphany, but we didn't this made until Yesterday. Gabe talked about this for days. We really wanted her to be able to join us, but she wasn't able. The weather was awful, so we decided that it was a perfect time.

We had a few technical glitches, but Gabe loved it. He wasn't quite strong enough to pipe the frosting 100% by himself, but he was in charge of the candy, Gianna was pacified with a few dabs of frosting on her tray. I love the photo where she is escaping her high chair. Steve jokingly mentioned that we should call it a Pinterest fail....he wasn't too far off. The red frosting had a hole in the bag, the gels were almost impossible to pipe. Gianna ate a few of the animal stands. The wreath started sliding off the barn before we were done. The kids ran out of interest (other than eating) before we were finished ;).

Gabe loved the tractor and has been nibbling a few bites a day.

...1|52...

...
I participated in a 52 week photo challenge last year. Each week had a specific theme, and many of them worked with our day to day life. As the year progressed, I became less interested in the theme and more interested in documenting each week with a specific tidbit about my kids. They are both at really exciting developmental milestones and they change so much from week to week. I have always wanted to be a scrapbook person, but never have the time. They own babybooks, but the spaces never seem to reflect what information I want to remember.

So...here is a new year. I am not sure what direction this will take. I may continue to post images according to the theme, or it may just be us living. (This week...there are two as I couldn't decide).

Gabe...3...We went to a new park on Sunday. It was bitter cold and we turned around before we made it to the swings. We will return once it is warmer. He has had a cold for a few days. He always says...."Mom, my nose is running out!" We promised him a pocket knife (wooden) once he only needed a diaper at night. I told him I would order it today. We went to Steve's office for work for lunch on Monday. He was incredibly excited to share with Rich how he could "poop on the potty like a big boy." Thankfully, Rich played along.

Gianna...1...I have very few pictures of the two of them together. She was so happy to be walking with him. She dropped her morning nap this week. She has decided that utensils are the only way to eat a meal. She likes to sit at the little table in the kitchen with Gabe, instead of a highchair. She wore a ponytail for the first time this week. She loves to lay on me and sings me songs. It is so sweet.
